Refined

REFINED

For you, God, tested us; you refined us like silver. You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs. You let people ride over our heads; we went through fire and water, BUT you brought us to a place of abundance. Psalm 66 10-12

By definition the word Refined means: with impurities or unwanted elements having been removed by processing. Purified. Treated. Developed. Improved.

Due to the fast growing city I live in there is construction going on everywhere. It is to the point where they have made it impossible to travel anywhere without lanes blocked, yield signs and excavators. My job is about 5 minutes away which is a good thing for me because I tend to run behind and this traffic is really messing up my routine!  I KNOW there is traffic and I KNOW it is going to take longer than 5 minutes but I still operate on that time frame for work.

One particular morning the traffic was heavier than normal and I decided to take a detour. It was fast and easy because I could not wait. In a rush, flying down this residential street God tells me “Just because you are moving doesn’t mean you are going to get there any faster”.

Now that message hit me pretty hard because when I am in a season of hardship I am doing everything I can to get out of it! I can’t just sit and wait it out. I’ve got to go! And after I see no sign of relief, I begin to believe the lie – I can solve this on my own.

I plan, worry, maneuver, and even sometimes manipulate to get what I want. When really all God is asking for us to do is trust him and be patient. Wait on him with instructions  as He will guide us in the right direction.

Let me remind you that God doesn’t give us more than we can handle. When the heat gets too hot, when we feel we cannot take any more – He cools us down, gives us rest. Provides a safe place and a way of escape.

In the refining process, just like that piece of silver in the heat – moving from heating to cooling, over and over, and over. Things are happening; the silver is growing stronger and shaped exactly the way it is suppose to be.

Again heating to cooling, heating to cooling.

In our waiting –  now our heart begins to purify. In our trials – now we begin to rely on Him.

We have to be aware of what is going on and what’s happening around us. Because we tend to focus so much on the pain, sadness, anger, and hurt we rush our own refining process. Which means we miss all what God is trying to do in us, for us and through us.

Our goal and our purpose is to serve Him with our shape and grow like him in character.

We cannot do that without being Refined.

                   Here are a few questions.
  • When there is tension in your life what is your first response?
  • Are you currently in the heating or cooling process?
  • What area is God trying to refine in your life?
  • What are your greatest fears with this process?
  • Will you allow yourself to surrender to Gods plan?
